Chord Progressions

First of all we need to figure out a chord progression..

To begin with, experiment with the piano chords used in C major or A minor as seen below. You can practice the chords on a keyboard and listen to them

You are welcome to use a different key and more complex chords, however C major is a good starting point.

Click the play button below to hear each chord. Try playing them in different orders to experiment with different progressions.

C Major
D minor
E minor
F Major
G Major
A minor

Choose two to four chords you would like to use for each section of your song (i.e. intro, verse, chorus, bridge) and notate them on your worksheet.

For example, for my first verse, I might choose the chord progression D minor, F major, G Major and it sounds like this:

Once you're happy with your chord progression, notate it on your chord progression sheet:

SMOOTHER BASS LINE

When you come to creating a bass line, you might want to make it sound 'smoother' by inverting some of the chords so that the notes don't sound as 'jumpy'.

Let's take a look at the example above. In the F Major chord, bringing the C down to create a 2nd inversion chord and in the G Major chord, bring down the down to create a 2nd inversion chord, have a listen:

The bottom notes of each chord can be used as a BASS LINE - we probably want to create some sort of groove with it. See if your can improvise with the rhythm of the bass notes, in this case D C D.

For example..

Play it through what ever instrument you have available (preferably one that could serve as a bass!)

Watch the following clip to see how I have put together the bass line with the chords in GarageBand. These lines in your song should be tested out on real live instruments as this is what you will be performing on for the final product! I have used the metronome to keep in me time.
